Over the past few years, doing a ‘first look’ has become a new trend in the wedding world. Although so many couples LOVE seeing each other before the ceremony, some want to be more traditional! Here are a few reasons why I think either decision is okay … as long as you allow enough time for portraits!
Reasons to say YES to a first look:
Brides have a million things running through their head on their wedding day. Seeing each other before the ceremony often eliminates the nerves! As soon as the groom turns around to see the bride, all nervousness washes away and the happy couple can enjoy their wedding!
As a photographer, I love witnessing raw emotion during first looks. I have seen laughter, tears and all of the above! It is so beautiful! I personally don’t like to be the center of attention, so I know my first look with Josh will be totally worth it.
When I meet with potential clients I always ask them whether or not they want to enjoy cocktail hour with their guests. Having and first look and doing all bridal party photos before the ceremony eliminates that stress of not being at your cocktail hour! Once you say “I do”, you can party! Who doesn’t love that?!
Reasons to say NO to a first look:
This is the number one reason why most couples don’t want to see each other before the ceremony. Most people who are having a traditional ceremony in a church often choose against the new trend of doing a first look. I totally respect that!!
Everyone stands. The doors open. There she is — the beautiful bride! Cue the tears!!!
I truly believe that first looks can be as beautiful as the moment the groom sees his bride walking down the aisle. It really depends on your comfort level! One HUGE piece of advice to future brides: talk to your photographer before making this decision. Ask them how much time is needed for portraits! The last thing you want to do is rush through photos :) I typically suggest about a two hour window between the end of the ceremony and the beginning of cocktail hour if the couple is NOT doing a first look.
Happy planning! xoxo
