Tips for Planning a Destination Wedding

When Josh and I decided to have a destination wedding we knew the planning process would be a little different than a “normal” wedding. How the heck to we bring our decor to another country? How will we know what the ceremony and reception will look like? AH! I had a million questions. After a few mild freak-outs, I sat down and make a plan. Here are a few things that helped make our wedding planning a breeze:

Do your research!! Josh and I knew we wanted to pick a resort that wasn’t a wedding factory. We didn’t want to feel like we were competing with other couples who were getting married at the resort. We were fortunate enough to plan a “preview trip” before signing on the dotted line. You can read more about that here!

We brought as much decor as possible to save money. I bought all of our table runners from Hobby Lobby and all of our randoms signs were from Michaels! I would pop into the store and walk around the sale section and pick up votive candle holders, too! We did this to avoid any extra charges at the resort. Destination weddings are usually a LOT cheaper than weddings in the States, so they charge you extra wherever they can! Josh and I bought random things here and there to avoid spending a lot of money all at once.

You’re probably thinking, “well that’s great Caroline but how the heck did you pack it all and get it to Mexico?” I thought about that too!! Our location was awesome which meant we really didn’t have to buy much extra stuff. There was so much natural beauty around us so we didn’t feel the need to add a ton of decor. We dedicated one extra-large checked bag to all of our wedding items (welcome bag contents, reception decor, etc). I kept all of our fragile things and important documents in a tote bag that I used as my carry-on… and my wedding dress was my personal item…HA! We had everything in one suitcase which might have been super problematic if our luggage got lost. YIKES! Could you imagine that? I guess the luggage Gods were looking out for us because we didn’t have any issues with our bags! We practiced packing everything about two weeks before we left which was SO helpful! From there, we figured out how many carry-on bags we needed for our clothing and other things.

I sent tons of photos to our coordinator to give her an idea of our vision. We wanted simple, soft, and romantic! Remember the hanging pink flowers at our ceremony location? Our florist recreated that from a photo I sent her!! I was really impressed with how much they listened and really tried to get everything right for us. I wanted my bouquet to be big and lush…yep, that’s exactly what I got! YASSS!

Having a destination wedding can add some unwanted stress to your life, but it’s totally worth it if you plan it right!
