Engagement sessions are one of my favorite things to shoot because they allow me to get to know my clients better and they act as a preview for the wedding! Let’s be honest, engagement sessions can be a little intimidating unless you know how to prepare for them! Here are a few things every bride should consider as they prepare :
Are you and your soon-to-be-hubby professional models? No? I didn’t think so. Having your picture taken can be a little awkward which is why I encourage everyone to have an engagement session. You can figure out your comfort level and boost your confidence :) You can also experience your photographer’s shooting style. For example, I LOVE making my clients laugh which often means I am saying something inappropriate behind the camera (whoopsie!)
Did you and your fiancé recently move to a new city? Is there a specific park or neighborhood that holds special meaning to you? Let’s shoot there! I encourage my couples to pick an engagement session location that reflects who they are as a couple and showcases their style. Are you adventurous? Do you love the city or open fields with dreamy light? Make it unique! If my couples are stumped, I always have a running list of locations I am dying to shoot at, so I can offer some guidance as well!
I always feel more confident when I get dressed up. Anyone else?! Anyways, I encourage my clients to wear something a little fancier than their everyday clothing. Girls – maybe wear some heels! Guys — no jeans, please!! Obviously if you want to have a more laid-back engagement session, that’s fine too!
I only shoot engagement sessions at sunrise or sunset. Why? It’s because of the LIGHT!! My style is very soft and romantic, so I try to avoid the harsh sun as much as possible. I try to educate all of my clients to see the differences in the light throughout the day. In order to get the creamy and glowy images, we need to shoot when the sun is low in the sky :)
I hope these tips help any bride who is going back and forth about whether or not they need an engagement session. The answer is YES!!
xoxo
